What Is That "Transparent Window" at the Synchrotron Beamline?

Let’s paint a picture.

Imagine a square silicon chip measuring 5mm × 5mm, about 200μm thick (roughly the thickness of two stacked sheets of A4 paper). Now, imagine the center of this chip is hollowed out, leaving behind only a tiny square opening—say, 1mm × 1mm. Stretched taut across this opening is an incredibly thin membrane.

This membrane isn't plastic, nor is it glass. It is silicon nitride (SiN)—a ceramic film "baked" from silicon and nitrogen. Its thickness is typically only 50nm, 100nm, or 200nm. To put that in perspective, 1 nanometer is roughly 1/60,000th the diameter of a human hair.

When X-rays hit the chip, the thick silicon frame blocks them, but the membrane in the middle is "almost invisible." The light passes straight through to illuminate your sample. Meanwhile, the membrane acts like a tiny hammock, holding your cells, powder, or nanowires in place so they don't fall into the vacuum chamber.

Why Silicon Nitride? Why not glass?

Glass contains heavy metals and absorption edges; when hit by soft X-rays (like those used in carbon edge spectroscopy), the glass absorbs the light before it even reaches the sample.

Plastic films (like Parafilm) can't handle vacuum, melt at high temperatures (<1000°C), and emit carbon signals that contaminate spectral data.

Silicon nitride, however, is virtually carbon-free, boasts a surface roughness of <1nm, withstands a 1-atmosphere pressure difference, and survives 1000°C annealing. It is the only material that ticks all three boxes: X-ray transparent, sample-supporting, and ultra-durable.

What does a standard product look like (off-the-shelf specs)?

Frame: 5×5mm / 7.5×7.5mm / 10×10mm; thickness usually 200μm.

Membrane Thickness: Standard stock: 50 / 100 / 150 / 200nm. Custom thicknesses (30–500nm) available (MOQ: 100 pcs).

Window Size: Single windows ranging from 0.25×0.25mm to 2×2mm, or arrays (2×2, 3×3 grids).

Packaging: 10 pieces per box (Gel-Pack clean container); designed for single use.
